How to Help your Sibling Recover from Porn Addiction

If you have a younger sibling, chances are, you would’ve caught them viewing adult content online. In this internet age, the younger generation will always be curious about porn. Especially since they have unprecedented access to it. One of the larger reasons behind this is the taboo surrounding sex in our culture and society. The hush-hush maintained around this topic, leaves the younger generation with no choice but to resort to the internet to learn about sex and its workings.

This is an alarming situation because porn is the most unrealistic education these impressionable minds can receive. It gives a very fake and exaggerated view of reality. As a result, young minds consume this content on the regular. They get addicted to it. It is important to remember that, curiosity about sex is completely normal. However, what isn’t normal is the extreme and violent nature of the sex depicted in porn. Teens and pre-teens consuming such content start to believe that this is the reality of sex. This is especially dangerous considering the fact that they can quickly get hooked to viewing such content on the regular. Completely unaware of its effects on their mental and physical health.

This Is Where You Come In

If you’ve noticed certain patterns and changes of behaviour in your sibling, and have come to the conclusion that they might be addicted to internet pornography, chances are they themselves aren’t aware of their addiction. And even if he/she might be aware, the chances are they will be too scared to ask for help. The reason for this being the stigma and shame surrounding the topic. Especially in our culture, they might never turn to their parents with regard to this problem. However, from the point of view of a sibling, they might be more comfortable sharing their issues with you. As an older sibling, it is your responsibility to protect and help out the younger ones, before they seek help from outside and end up with the wrong advice.

Here are some ways how you can help your sibling recover from porn addiction:

Do not snitch on them

In such a situation, it’s normal for you to want to get your parents involved. It is normal for you to confused on how to deal with this situation on your own. But here, what you need to take into consideration is your siblings’ feelings. As they might not be comfortable conversing with the parents on this particular topic, getting them involved will only lead to your sibling pushing you away, causing bigger problems. Instead, use the bond you have as siblings and make them feel comfortable in opening up to you.

Normalise the situation

It’s most likely that your sibling is currently feeling shameful about their behaviour, and in order to help them, it is important that you reduce the shame surrounding the topic and make them feel more comfortable. You need to reduce their fears. They will be feeling dirty or perverted for being sexually curious. However, this does not mean that you endorse their behaviour.

The combination of sex and shame is a toxic combo and can be very harmful. For you to be able to help your sibling, you need to be able to make them understand that their sexual feelings aren’t bad or dirty. It is their approach that is wrong.

Educate them on the fallacies of porn

They need to understand that such extremely explicit material can have harmful effects on a developing brain. If they’ve had this addiction for quite some time now, chances are they’ve seen it all. They believe that’s how sex and intimacy works in the real world.

Porn on the internet rarely ever consists of a couple in love, having sex. Instead, extreme fetishes, fantasies, and violence is what is available to watch. It’s on you to make them understand how highly produced pornographic content is and that it’s not how a sexual encounter happens in real life. It might also be helpful to give them a talk on masturbation and how it must be done in moderation.

Implement measures to help

First, do your research on the subject and educate yourself on how you could help your sibling. Establish boundaries with them and make them understand what’s acceptable and what’s not. Educate them on the reality of porn addiction and how bad it can get. Remember, you can only help them when they become aware of their addiction and seek a positive change.

Once they’re willing to recover from the addiction, become an ally in the process. Download a porn blocker like BlockerX on all their devices and make yourself their accountability partner. It is very helpful and makes them take their recovery more seriously when they’re aware that they’re accountable to someone.

Remain positive and provide motivation

During the process of recovery, a person’s mental and physical state is very fragile. As an ally, it’s your responsibility to encourage your sibling with positivity and motivate them, even if they relapse once or twice during the process. Make sure you don’t let them be alone by themselves for a long period of time, this can often trigger a relapse. They need your support right now! Tell them how proud you are of the efforts they’re making and use this opportunity to spend more time with them.

It may take a few attempts and talks before they fully recover from their addiction. Remain patient and willing to provide any help they need along the way.
